Land Transfer Tax

A provincial tax payable by the buyer upon registration of a property transfer in Ontario, calculated on a sliding scale based on the purchase price.

Rates range from 0.5% on the first $55,000 to 2.5% on amounts over $2,000,000. The City of Toronto levies an additional municipal land transfer tax at similar rates, meaning Toronto buyers pay double land transfer tax.

First-time homebuyers may qualify for a provincial rebate of up to $4,000 and a Toronto rebate of up to $4,475, effectively eliminating the tax on homes up to approximately $368,000.
