Schools & Daycare in Waterloo Region: A Guide for Families (2026)

If you’re buying a home in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge or the townships, schools and child care are probably near the top of your list, often right behind “how many bedrooms?” For many families, finding information about Schools & Daycare in Waterloo Region is just as important as the house itself. The right school or a daycare spot close by matters as much as the house.

Here’s how education and child care work in Waterloo Region, and what to check before you make an offer.

Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB)

The WRDSB is the region’s largest board and its largest public-sector employer. It runs schools in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, plus communities in the townships such as Elmira, St. Jacobs, New Hamburg, Baden and Ayr. Programs vary by school and include French Immersion (starting in Grade 1), specialized secondary programs and alternative and continuing education.

Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB)

The WCDSB serves the same area. Its five Catholic high schools are Resurrection and St. Mary’s in Kitchener, St. David in Waterloo, and Monsignor Doyle and St. Benedict in Cambridge. The board also has a large adult and continuing education program. Like much of the region, it’s growing quickly, with enrolment pushed up by families moving from the GTA and by new housing.

Tip: Don’t Assume the Closest School Is Your School

This is the part that catches buyers off guard. School attendance boundaries are set by address, not by distance. The school down the street may not be the one your child attends. French Immersion boundaries often differ from the English-program boundaries for the same address.

In fast-growing areas, including many newer subdivisions in Kitchener’s south end, west Waterloo and parts of Cambridge, students can be assigned to a “holding school” farther away until a local school is built or has room. Boundaries can also change over time.

Before you buy:

  • Check whether the address is also in the French Immersion boundary (if that matters to you).
  • Call the school to ask about capacity, portables and busing eligibility.
  • Ask your agent about planned schools in newer neighbourhoods.

Private Schools in Waterloo Region

Waterloo Region also has a good range of independent schools. The City of Kitchener lists around 15 private schools in the area, which differ in teaching approach, faith background and cost. Some well-known options:

  • St. John’s-Kilmarnock School (Breslau): a JK–12 independent day school on a large campus between Kitchener and Guelph, known for academics and for the International Baccalaureate.
  • Rockway Mennonite Collegiate (Kitchener): a Grade 7–12 school with Mennonite roots, known for strong music and arts programs and a close-knit community.
  • Kitchener-Waterloo Bilingual School: an early-years and elementary school focused on bilingual education.
  • The K-W Montessori School: Montessori-based education for younger children.
  • Woodland Christian High School (Breslau): a Christian secondary school serving families across the region.
  • Blyth Academy Waterloo and AIM Learning Community: smaller, more flexible settings for students who want a different pace or format.

Tuition, admission and waitlists vary a lot, so book tours early. Many schools start admissions in the fall for the next September. Since several of these schools draw students from across the region, they can give you more freedom in where you buy.

Daycare and Licensed Child Care

For families with young children, child care can be the bigger challenge. Here’s how it works in Waterloo Region.

$10-a-Day Child Care (CWELCC)

Under the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system, licensed child care fees for children from birth to age five have dropped sharply. In Ontario, base fees at participating programs are capped at $22 per day. Programs that were already charging less have their fees frozen at the lower rate. Ontario hasn’t reached the $10-a-day target yet, but families at participating centres pay far less than they did a few years ago.

Not every licensed program takes part, so ask each provider whether it’s in CWELCC.

OneList Waterloo Region

The Region of Waterloo runs OneList, one online waitlist for licensed child care. Instead of calling centres one by one, you create a single profile and pick the programs you want. Demand is high, especially for infant and toddler spots, so sign up as early as you can, ideally during pregnancy or as soon as you know you’re moving.

The Region also offers child care fee subsidies for eligible families. That can lower costs even further on top of CWELCC.

Before- and After-School Programs

Once children reach kindergarten, many elementary schools offer before- and after-school programs on site or nearby, run by the board or by community partners. Space varies by school, so ask when you register.

In real estate, “near good schools” often really means “in the right boundary, with daycare that fits our commute.” A few things to think about:

  • Commute and drop-off routes. A daycare near work may suit you better than one near home, or the other way around.
  • Neighbourhood growth. New neighbourhoods have newer homes but may lack schools and child care at first. Established neighbourhoods usually have both but fewer listings.
  • Resale value. Homes in popular school areas tend to hold their value and sell more easily.
  • Flexibility. Private schools and French-language boards draw from wide areas, which gives you more choice about where to live.
